Description
Each year the Cincinnati Council of the Navy League presents a sword to the top midshipman at Miami University.

The 115 midshipmen strong NROTC Battalion at Miami University has consistently been named one of the best units in the country. We pride ourselves in creating a top caliber Navy and Marine officer corps. We feel that Miami University's Liberal Arts curriculum better prepares our graduates for the numerous command challenges they will face in today's Navy and Marine Corps.

The Department of the Navy established the Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1926, with six initial units. Because of the great expansion of the Navy during the Second World War, it became obvious that the Naval Academy could not supply officers in sufficient quantities. To expand the NROTC program, Congress passed the Holloway Plan in 1946. At present, there are 69 Naval ROTC units, at some of the finest universities in the country. The Miami NROTC Unit had its start in 1943 as a V-12 unit, when a radio communications and bakers school was established. It became an NROTC Unit in 1946 under the Holloway Plan with its original offices in the west wing of Symmes Hall. In 1948 Rowan Hall, designed especially for the Navy, became the home of the NROTC. In 1971, the Unit moved to its present location in Millett Assembly Hall.

Miami University's strong bond with the Navy has produced many distinguished Naval alumni. Several of Miami University's graduates have become renowned military leaders - Admirals in the Navy, Generals in the Marine Corps, individuals honored for their courage, and many others who gave their lives for our nation. Their ranks include Admiral Sidney Souers, who helped create the Central Intelligence Agency and who served as its first Director, and Second Lieutenant Terry Graves, who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Today, Miami University's Naval ROTC Unit is committed to continuing this long tradition of excellence, to train and graduate exceptional men and women to serve as leaders in the Naval Service.

Miami University and Naval ROTC...Let the Journey Begin.

NROTC Mission Instill the highest ideals of honor, duty, and loyalty. Prepare Midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically for commissioned Naval Service. Develop leadership and professionalism so Midshipmen may assume the responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government. The goals of the NROTC are to provide students with:

An understanding of the concepts and principles of Naval Service and Science
An understanding of associated military and civilian professional knowledge
An appreciation of the concept and requirements of National Security
